English 102 Paper #2

This paper will be due March 12
3-5 pages, double-spaced typed. Be sure to include your rough draft, peer reviews and the in-class-writing this assignment was based on.

Write an argumentative essay using one of the following choices:

A) Watch the Oscar Ceremonies on February 29th and compare and evaluate the nominees, what factors go into deciding who gets what award? What impact does the awards have on the notoriety and financial success of the film? Choose a favorite film among these that you believe should win, or an actor that deserves special recognition and explain why. For an outside source, you may use (http://www.imdb.com)and select external reviews to link you to critiques from journalists like Roger Ebert to other web sites to see what the critics said negatively and positively about said film. Recount the Award Ceremonies in your paper, and explain what the Awards says about our culture, and answer this: do you believe that justice was served?

B) Choose your favorite film of all time, based on the in class writing and write an essay recounting what the critics said about it using the (http://www.imdb.com) link to external reviews. Then explain to the critics why they are wrong or right, based on your perceptions of the film.

C) Write an essay about slam poetry using your notes from SlamNation, and other videos we watch in class. Examine the validity of this art form and elaborate on the positive and negative aspects of this art form. You may wish to use web sites such as (http://www.taylormali.com), and (http://www.livepoet.com), some of the poets have full-length video clips of poems on this site, and (http://www.poetryslam.com) for reference. You may also compare the poems in the slam genre to poems you have read previously or to music lyrics as long as you focus on the social significance or lack-there-of pertaining to this medium. Shows such as Def Poetry Jam on HBO might be referenced as well.

Paper 1, English 102, Arguing about Music

Popular artists, especially songwriters tend to reflect social issues, or social values. One songwriter may explicitly convey a message such as Jimmy Buffet's "Margaritaville," while another may reflect aspects of the culture such as Brittney Spears "Oops, I Did It Again." Choosing one of the options below, write a 3-5 page double spaced essay arguing the artistic significance of this artist or song or poem in question. Argue one way or another whether this artist will be remembered 50 years from now and include reasons and specific examples. This paper should expand on the In-Class-Writing assignment that we did in class.

A) Explicate the words of a favorite song or poem and tell us what the writer wants us to express. Give us a little background information on the singer/poet so we know what context it is in. Be sure and photocopy the words and attach to back of essay. (Make sure the singer wrote the song. It might be a cover song.)

B) Write a review of a concert you went to. Describe what it was like: Who was performing? What songs did they sing? How did the audience react? What was the venue like?
What did the artist do or say in the show that was really unique? How would you classify such an artist? Who would you compare him or her to?

For either option, you should find an outside source, either from a news article, or magazine article. You may use the web or the Online Index from the library to accomplish this task.
Remember, that art is defined as:

Human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature 2.a. The conscious production

or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of beauty,

specifically the production of the beautiful in a graphic or plastic medium. 3. High quality of conception or

execution; aesthetic value. American Heritage College Dictionary, 3rd edition.

The main thing to consider is whether this artist says something about our society, directly, or inadvertently, and will this artist stand the test of time. Be sure and use MLA style citation and work cited.

Be sure and bring a rough draft on 2/9 to share ideas and papers with the class and then on the 11th, bring a draft for a peer editing session. The final copy is due on 2/13

See criteria set forth in the syllabus. Papers without peer review, I-C-W, MLA Work Cited/Bibliography, and papers not meeting length and other assignment requirements will not be accepted.

D) An article about Dylan playing at a Civil Rights March in the 1960s
E) A conclusion: Dylan clearly has authored a work of art.

Sample Frame for Concert

A) Introduction : I saw Berlin the other day
B) Thesis: Although Terri Nunn has a great voice, she probably won't be well remembered for more than singing the Top Gun theme song.
C) Review of show: Many people got in for free, audience primarily older, good show.
D) Berlin had a few hits in the 80s but the band lacks the spirit of originality.
E) Maybe an article on Aimee Mann, who also had a hit in the 80s and came back in the 90s as a songwriter.
