Final Paper guidelines

You may either continue your project as stated in the precis/annotated bibliography or choose Option B or C below if you are not satisfied with your current topic. Write an 8-10 page argumentative paper. You will use MLA parenthetical and work cited rules in your paper.

You must include at least 5 magazine or journal or book citations in your work cited list. For every work you cite, you should paraphrase or quote directly at least once. You may include web sites, personal interviews, films, television shows, etc as sources. You may use as many sources as you want, and the minimum of five as stated above.

In this paper you must prove to me that this filmmaker, musical artist, writer, actor is an artist that will stand the test of time because of originality, social validity, excellence in craft, etc; or that a particular work or series of works such as a television show, a film, or series of films, concept album etc. are a bellwether of that genre. Using elements of logos, ethos, and pathos write this paper towards a skeptical audience.

Option B In Bowling for Columbine Michael Moore asks why America is so violent. Examine the arguments made in this movie and look at the solutions he offers then propose a solution of your own to this issue considering the complexity of this problem. Use outside sources to support your thesis.

Option C Smoke Signals and the short story it was based on "This Is What It Means To Say Phoenix, Arizona" address some concerns of what it was like to be a Native American in our current age. Write an argumentative research paper suggesting that America give reparations to Native Americans. Then explain why and how such reparations would occur. You should be able to look up articles using Native American Newspapers, but you might be able to find what you are looking for in Academic Search Elite and in other indexes.
Note: If you choose option B or C, you still must include the minimum number and types of sources.

Your grade, worth 200 points (20%) will depend on the following 10 elements

Rough draft/ Peer review
Thesis and introduction
Conclusion
Length and Format
MLA Work Cited and Bibliography
Fairness and tone of argumentation
Grammar
Punctuation
Clear, well written, meaningful prose
Following the above directions

Note: Although each aspect is worth 20 points, failure to follow instructions, lack of MLA or Length can lead to an automatic F for the paper

Presentation
: This will be a large portion of the participation grade, roughly worth 50 points or 5% of the overall grade.

You will sign up for a slot between April 19th and 30th.

You should base it on your final paper. It is not a mere reading of the paper, although you may read from your paper during the presentation. You should prepare a five-minute lecture on your project. In this lecture you may use audio-visual aides, or handouts, or transparencies to augment your presentation. Unfortunately, we don't have computer access so PowerPoint is out unless you plan on bringing your own portable computer.

The grade is simply A, B+, C or F. A=50 pts, B+=44 pts, C+=39 pts, and an F is a zero.

Time: Five minutes minimum, ten minutes maximum
After your five-minute presentation, there will be time for questions from the audience, so be prepared.

* You may be creative! You can write a song based on your paper, or present a skit, poem or monologue.

Equipment: I can order the VCR and bring in my DVD but you will have to supply your own computer if you are using PowerPoint, CD player, etc.

Portfolio and Revision:

Portfolio and Optional Revision: At end of semester you will hand in all formal class-work. All 4 formal papers will be included, including midterm. If you are missing any of the original drafts, you must print a new copy out and attach a letter explaining that you lost the original copy.

You will be allowed to choose one of your first three formal papers to revise for an improved grade. You will not be allowed revision credit if you do not attach the original paper that was graded and list of all the changes made to the paper. I will look at the original paper and compare it with the new copy and see if all the changes you have made have improved the grade. I will raise the grade accordingly, or keep it the same if revision is not adequate.

Original Paper: If you are missing the original, then the paper is not eligible for revision credit

Revised Copy: Please label copy, and place on top.

Sheet listing all the changes made to the paper
Ex) Change 13, Expanded Conclusion by five sentences offering a solution to the problem of violence in America. See page 8.
Change 14. Fixed MLA Bibliography entry for Bowling For Columbine. See page 9.

Not handing in a portfolio, will result in a failing grade for the course.

Portfolio due May 7th

Place in regular size pocket folder. Binders will be discarded. Portfolios not in folders will not be accepted.
Any papers you want to keep, you should photocopy as the portfolio remains with the English Department for one year.

Grade Notification: It is not allowed for me to notify you of your grade by email or phone. You may leave a large self addressed stamped envelope and I will send you a photocopy of your final paper if you wish to receive the final paper back, or small self addressed stamped envelope to receive your final grade notification by mail.

English students, I have created this page for your convenience. I will post assignments and handouts here. You can cut and paste and print them out. You should scroll down using the dates of our current semester. There will also be a copy of the syllabus posted early. Remember, if you are absent, you should call a classmate to find out what you missed that day. You are responsible for all assignments.
