English A- Paper 3
This paper is due on
Wednesday, April 14 right after we return from Spring Break
3-5 pages, double-spaced, on one of the following:
1. Answer the question on page 160, choosing one of the two topics
Page 160.
2. After watching Smoke Signals and reading “This Is What It Means To Say Phoenix, Arizona” by Sherman Alexie, write a paper comparing and contrasting the characters of Victor and Thomas Builds-The-Fire. Use specific examples from story and movie.
English 102:Research Project:
This includes paper 3 and paper 4. Paper 3 is the Précis/Annotated Bibliography and Paper 4 is the 10-page Argumentative Research Paper.
For Paper 4, you may write about a topic you have already covered in the first 2 papers, but this paper shouldn’t be an extension of the prior paper. Rather, your assignment is to explore the social validity of an artist and for that purpose you may use a musical artist, filmmaker, actor, writer, etc… In this paper you should make the case that this artist is conveying a social/political message or an aesthetic message using their craft and creative spirit. You should examine what the artist contributes overall to the human record. You may focus on a particular signature work to demonstrate this but you will use at least 5 outside sources including magazine articles and books to support your argument.
Précis and Annotated Bibliography: Paper 3 (4-6 pages)
Précis: Write a 3 page double-spaced synopsis of your paper: This will a proposal of what you hope to do for the final paper. This should be in short essay form describing your intended argument, what you expect to find, and why the topic interests you specifically.
Annotated Bibliography: Using MLA Bibliographical Style complete an annotated bibliography where you list 10 different potential sources for your paper including books, journal articles, personal interviews, film, music, web-sites, etc… and then under each source write a full paragraph explaining the usefulness of this source and summarize it in a few sentences.
Due Friday, April 2
Your Paper 3 grade will be based on the overall impression. You need to follow the above directions and make sure you follow the MLA bibliography format.
100=Excellence
90=Good
80= Average
70=Satisfactory,
60=Not Satisfactory
0-59-Failing
Note: If you have trouble finding a topic that you want to research, I will assign a topic for you and we will watch a film based on this topic in class after Spring Break. Still, you should complete the Précis and Annotated Bibliography as it is your paper 3 grade.
Final Assignment Rubric and Presentation Guidelines will be assigned after Spring Break.
